They understand that an embarrassing and catastrophic defeat of Ukraine in the hands of Putin of Russia will help Trump to win the election.

The narrative of the Biden White House has always been that they will not push Ukraine towards negotiation with Russia. It has to be the choice of Zelensky. They have been running with that narrative for the past two years. If Zelensky thinks that their are some back channel diplomacy between the USA and Russia, he might reason the idea of calling up Putin to avoid being irrelevant.

Projecting in this case means, instead of saying they the West want a ceasefire, they narrate it has if Putin wants a ceasefire. But in reality, it is the Biden White House that really really needs a ceasefire, because of the 2024 coming elections in the USA. In other words they project that ceasefire idea unto Putin of Russia. This makes the Biden White House to look like it is winning. Why would Putin want a ceasefire when it is winning on all levels?
