In this tutorial. I will teach you how to make the above image in photoshop by combining the two images below. This above is known as a Displacement map. We are going to combine other things. Such as the Pinch filter, Layer adjustments, Opacity and a few other elements. It is a slightly complicated process. So I have provided GIF images as a guide for you to follow along with the steps and also take notes on the steps.

What we need is to create a displacement map, based off our first image. Which is the image below. You can download the image below.


In this tutorial. We shall refer to the image below as “Woman face for covering

First step is to open photoshop.

Second step is the create a file of 450 width pixel by 611 height pixel (see illustration below)

With Reference to the GIF image above.

Click on the file menu.

Click new.

Set the width pixel to 450.

Set the height pixel to 611

Set the resolution to 72

Click the Create button


Imbedding The Downloaded Image Into The New Photoshop File Created (see illustration below)

Click File menu

Click Place Embedded

Look for the downloaded file (I mean the “Woman face for covering“)

Select it and Click the Place button

Right click on the right side of the image layer of “Woman face for covering

Select Duplicate Layer

In the Duplicate Layer Dialogue Box. As shown above.

Set Document to New.

For Name, Type Displacement map

Click the OK button

Now a new file is create from the Duplicated layer. The name of the file is Displacement map as you named it in the Duplicate Layer Dialogue Box. You will see the file opened as a tab to the right of the current opened file.


Putting a Blur on The Layer in The Displacement Map File (see illustration below)

Click on the tab to you right. The tab should have “Displacement map” written on it. (As shown below)

Click the Filter menu

Select Blur

Select Gaussian Blur

You will be taken to the Gaussian Blur Dialogue Box. (As shown below)

Set the Radius to 2

Click the OK button

Click on the Adjustment Layer Button (As shown below)

Select Black & White

Usually the default settings should be fine.

Now Make sure to save it as Displacement map


Save The File As Displacement map (see illustration below)

Click File

Click Save As

Save as ‘Displacement map’


Exit From The “Displacement map” File (see illustration below)

To close the ‘Displacement map‘ file,

Click the “X” button to the extreme right of the ‘Displacement map‘ file’s tab. (As shown below)

Open The “union jack round ” Image File. That You downloaded Previously (see illustration below)

Click File

Click Open

Search and click the “union jack round ” file that you downloaded previously.

In this tutorial. We shall refer to the image below as “union jack round

Placing The “union jack round ” Image On The “Woman face for covering(see illustration below)

While in the “union jack round ” file

Click and Drag the “union jack round ” layer (As shown below)

Drag it to the Tab of the “Woman face for covering” file and release it on her face. (As shown below)


Re-size The “union jack round ” Image Over The Image of The “Woman face for covering(see illustration below)

Click The Move tool. Make sure Show Transform Controls is checked. (As shown below)

Press down The Shift Key, while you adjust handle of the bounding box of the “union jack round ” image over the image of the “Woman face for covering


Convert The “union jack round ” Image to Smart Object And Reduce The Opacity (see illustration below)

Place your mouse on the right of the “union jack round ” Layer.

Right Click

Select Convert to Smart Object. Now the Layer will be converted to a smart object.

Select the “union jack round ” Layer

Reduce the Opacity to 51% (As shown below)


Using The Pinch Filter on The “union jack round ” Layer (see illustration below)

Select theunion jack round ” Layer

Click The Filter menu

Select Distort

Select Pinch (As shown below)

In the Pinch Dialogue box. Set amount to -20. (As shown below)

Choose a Blend Mode For The “union jack round ” Layer (see illustration below)

Click the Blend Mode

Select Color Burn


Apply The Displacement Filter To The “union jack round ” Layer (see illustration below)

Click Filter menu

Click Distort

Select Displace

A Displace Dialogue Box appears. set Horizontal and Vertical Scale to 5 ( As shown below)

Click OK in the Displace Dialogue Box

You will be asked to select a file. (As shown below)

Select the Displacement map file. The File you created earlier.

The displacement map file will allow the “union jack round Layer to find the curves on the face.


The “union jack round ” Layer Can Still Be Moved to Fit The Face Properly If Need Be (see illustration below)


Apply a Mask Layer to The “union jack round ” Layer To Clean Out The Eye Area (see illustration below)


Apply a Vibrance Adjustment Layer The “union jack round ” Layer (see illustration below)
